Hilltoppers improve to 15-7

AUSTIN, Texas – Through the first two sets, it looked as if Incarnate Word would pull the upset over St. Edward's Tuesday evening, but the Hilltoppers would come up big winning the final three sets for the 3-2 victory over the Cardinals, 15-25, 22-25, 25-21, 25-19, 15-12.
 
Incarnate Word (8-17) and St. Edward's (15-7) split the first eight points for a 4-4 tie. Chetina Chavis would lead the charge for the Cardinals as she had two kills and a block assist to lead them on a 13-6 run for a 17-10 lead. Incarnate Word would coast from there as they hit .378 for the opening-set victory.
 
In set two, the Cardinals jumped out quick on the Hilltoppers, 16-7. HANNAH RAUCH and MEREDITH BARD would have the hot hand, as they got St. Edward's back into the match at 18-15. St. Edward's would keep close, with the score 20-17, but three-straight point by the Cardinals would be the difference as they took the second set, 25-22.
 
Then things started to turn around for the Hilltoppers. Leading 20-19 late in the set, MARY MCNAMARA dished out four assists to lead St. Edward's to five of the last seven points. MARY KOEHLER was outstanding during the set, producing seven kills, while MICHELLE HUNDT tallied 15 digs during the set.
 
Set four saw the Hilltoppers swinging away as they hit .366 as a team during the set. Hundt was also key again, as she racked up 15 digs during the set to help knot things up, 2-2.
 
In the fifth and deciding set, it was Incarnate Word who took the early lead, 8-6. St. Edward's would tie the score, 12-12. Three-straight kills by the Hilltoppers brought home the victory. The win was the third in a row for St. Edward's and fifth out of the last six matches.
 
Hundt collected a season-high 41 digs, while Koehler also posted a season-high in kills with 21. She also hit an outstanding .314 on the evening and posted a double-double with 13 digs. McNamara dished out a game-high 34 assists and also produced four digs.
 
The Hilltoppers will be back in action Thursday when they travel to take on Texas Woman's. First-serve is set for 7:00 p.m. in Denton, Texas. Live stats and video will be available on the Pioneer Athletic Website.
