While some work years to perfect their talents, Colleen Jones Underhill was blessed with a competitive drive that helped put her at the forefront of high school tennis in Kentucky. Doris and Robert Jones encouraged their seven children to play all sports, with swimming as a must-do every year until they were teenagers.

Her competitive drive, outstanding achievements and decades of dominance on the court will be celebrated as Underhill will be inducted into the Fourth Annual Louisville Catholic Sports Hall of Fame on No. 4.

Underhill grew up playing softball, volleyball and basketball at Holy Spirit grade school, but at age 13 it was tennis that instantly became her passion. She moved with grace on the court and displayed the talent necessary to earn the state’s No. 1 singles ranking for 14-and-under girls. She continued to hold that No. 1 ranking in the 16-and-under and 18-and-under age groups for singles and was ranked No. 1 in the 18-and-under Doubles teams as well.

At Sacred Heart Academy, she was a four-year letter-winner in tennis and won the state singles title her junior year. She was the Kentucky Female Player of the Year in 1973 and dominated the state and regional junior tennis circuit, winning more than 50 junior tennis titles in Kentucky, Indiana and Tennessee in singles and doubles. She also earned national rankings in the under-16 and under-18 age groups.

Colleen furthered her tennis career at Miami University in Ohio, where she graduated in three years and played No. 1 singles amassing a 28-2 career record in college.

For the past 35 years, she has competed in USTA leagues and tournaments with the River City tennis team. She was a national runner-up in 1981, 1995 and 1997, a USTA Team Tennis state champion 11 times and a USTA Team Tennis Senior state champion six times.

In addition to her celebrated playing history, she revitalized the Sacred Heart tennis program as the varsity coach from 2000-06 seasons and oversaw the construction of the Underhill Tennis Complex at the school.

The HOF is presented by Commonwealth Bank and Trust and sponsored in part by the Zoeller Company, Bill Collins Ford Family, Sacred Heart Academy, and Bellarmine University.
