The baseball season started Monday despite the frightful weather outside. Here’s a look at the Assumption, Holy Cross, Mercy, Presentation, and Sacred Heart capsules.

Head coach: Lisa Pinkston (third season)

2017 finish: 12-20, lost in the Seventh Region semifinals.

Returning starters: Maggie Metzger (outfield, junior), Maranda Thomas (infield, outfield, senior), Sydney Young (catcher, junior), Braxton Downs (infield, junior), Ashton Dowdy (pitcher, junior),  Leah Raeber (utility, sophomore), and Jordan Ridge (infield, senior).

Other key players: Caroline Weickel (pitcher, sophomore), Madison Loechle (utility, sophomore), and Kaitlyn Bailey (utility, sophomore) .

Outlook:  Under Coach Pinkston’s leadership, the Rockets have generated consistent offensive production, and that is expected to continue.  With a wealth of experience defensively, Assumption is counting heavily on a young, but talented, pitching staff to build upon last year’s success.

Head coach: Tony Young (fifth season)

2017 finish: 24-13, three-time defending All “A” state champion, lost in the first round of the Sixth Region Tournament.

Returning starters:  Maddie Gailor (center fielder, junior),Carson Goatley (pitcher, sophomore), Amber Kaufman (third baseman, junior),  Natalie Luckett( outfielder, senior), Bella Velez (pitcher, sophomore),  Kadi Weaver (catcher, junior), and Dakota Young (first baseman, senior)

Other key players:  Kailey Reed (outfielder, senior) and Maddie Wilson (infielder, junior).

Outlook: We look to become the first team in history to win four All “A” championships in a row. We also look to win region and get back to state this year after a disappointing end to last year’s season.

Head coach: Greg Meiners (fourth season).

2017 Finish: 30-12, 24th District champion, Sixth Region champion, fifth place at the state tournament.

Returning Starters: Lexi Ray (pitcher, senior), Taylor McGowan (first baseman, junior), Ryan Ann Hobbs (designated hitter, junior), Lexy Wright (shortstop, senior), Madison Dykes (right fielder, senior), and Tate McCormick (left fielder, senior).

Other key players: Jill Vorreiter (utility, senior), Kennedy Higdon (catcher, junior), Jinhee Walsh (third baseman, junior), Mia Cole (second baseman, junior), Mackenzie Newton (first baseman, junior), Maddy Johnson (center fielder, sophomore, and Kaitlynn Gregory (pitcher, sophomore).

Outlook: We expect to win the regional championship for the sixth time in the seven years and compete for a state title. Our young ladies understand it takes hard work and dedication, and we are going to have to earn it. We lost a great group of senior leaders and they will be missed, but their leading by example will not be forgotten. We are looking forward to competing.

Head coach: Matt Meagher (second season)

2017 finish: 18-17, lost in the first round of Seventh Region Tournament.

Returning starters: Alexis Cammack (outfielder, junior), Lili Cortese (outfield, senior), Kayla Harp (infielder, senior), Courtney Jackson (infielder, outfielder, senior), Nicole Kuchma (infielder, pitcher, senior), Madeline Meagher (pitcher, infielder, senior), and Ashlynn Tucker (outfielder, junior).

Other key players: Sierra Willis (pitcher, sophomore).

Outlook: We return an experienced team that hopes to compete for an All-A state berth and make a run at the district championship. We have several upper-classmen that need to show leadership in order for that to happen. We have a tremendous group of young ladies eager to get back on the field.

Head Coach: Bob A. Wheatley (11th season)

2017 finish: 15-15, lost in the first round of the Seventh Region Tournament

Returning starters: Alley Puckett (shortstop, junior), Natalie Fichter (third base, senior), Kate Black (catcher, senior), Jessica Biernesser (first baseman, senior), Jessica Smith (outfield, senior), and Mollie McMillen (second baseman/outfielder, sophomore).

Other key players: Kaelin Gregory (outfield, junior), Audrey Lentz (pitcher, junior), Morgan McMillen (first baseman, sophomore), Haleigh Jones (outfield, junior), Kaylin Kendrick-Worman (catcher, freshman), and Gabby Case (shortstop, freshman).

Outlook: We will have to replace Emma Burnett in the circle who was a four year starter. We lost a lot of quality seniors off of last year’s team that will be very difficult to replace. Alley Puckett, Jessica Smith, and Natalie Fichter will help lead the team. Pitcher Audrey Lentz and catcher Kate Black will play a key role in how we do this season. Kaelin Gregory will be a key contributor as will be Mollie McMillon who will be changing positions to second base. Staying patient with this young group will be critical; they work very hard and want to succeed.
