The Assumption vs CAL game went down to the final two minutes to determine who would get the top seed in Sunday’s Semifinals...and neither team won.

CAL struck first with 15:10 left in the first half from a penalty stroke from junior Claudia Thomas caused by an Assumption player illegally stopping the ball with her body behind the goalie. CAL would go on to hold that 1-0 lead until the final minutes of the game.
“We were playing as a team and having fun out there,” said junior Becca Kline, who is committed to play at the University of Miami of Ohio. “We didn’t let that first goal affect us and we really fought the entire game to get it back.”
Assumption would have multiple corners throughout the rest of the first half and second half, but they couldn’t convert on any of them.
As time was winding down, Assumption got the ball downfield, desperately needing a goal to tie the game. Within a cluster of both CAL and Assumption players near the right post of the goal, senior Kate Bale snuck in a goal, tying the game with 1:22 left to play.
The game would close with a 1-1 tie between Assumption and CAL which caused the seeding to be determined from the point system from previous pool games. Wins are counted as 3 points, a tie is 1 point, goals are 1 point each until there are 4 goals scored in a game, and a shutout is 1 point.
With Assumption’s game tying goal, the Rockets ended with 17 points from pool play compared to CAL’s 15.
Kline was excitement was revealed as she said, “All we wanted was to just score that goal and once we did, we just focused on holding it because we knew if we could tie, we’d win the pool.”
With Assumption claiming the one seed from Varsity A Pool 1, they are set to face Manual (2-1) on Sunday at 4:30 followed by CAL vs Sacred Heart (3-0) at 5:30 in the Semifinals of the Apple Tournament. Winners of those games will go on to face each other in the championship on Monday, August 26.
